Consecration could qualify as a fifty-cent word, but it simply means to be set apart for service to God. Romans 12 calls us to consecration.
I. Vss. 1-2 - It is a call to full consecration. A. Vs. 1-God wants us to be living sacrifices, not like O.T. sacrifices. B. Vs. 2a - Not "poured into the world's mold." (J.B. Phillips) Molded by the word and prayer, not the world system. C. Vs. 2b - Jesus wants us to be transformed - changed from within. II. Vss. 3-8 - It is a call for us to find our gifts and fill our place in the work. A. Vs. 3 - God has gifted us for His service through His church. What are your gifts? B. Vss. 4-5 - Not all of us have the same gifts. We are many but one. Each of us has a work to do . Is yours getting done? C. Vss. 6-8 - Whatever our gifts are, let us actually use them. III. Vss. 9-16 - It is a call to build the fellowship of the church. How? A. Vs. 9a - Love sincerely. (We can't pick and choose who we love.) B. Vs. 9b - Cling to what is good and hate evil. C. Vs. 10 - Honor fellow church members above yourself. D. Vs. 11 - Stay on fire. E. Vs. 12 - Have a positive' prayerful attitude. F. Vs. 13 - Be open-hearted and open-handed. G. Vs. 14 - Do not retaliate. H. Vs. 15 - Be sympathetic with all. I. Vs. 16 - Be humble. This about your call to consecration, your use of your gifts and your helping build the fellowship of the church where you are a member. The life and success of your church depends on each doing his or her part. Note: You could probably make a series of two or three sermons out of all of the material given here. I preached this sermon as a DOM and did not have the opportunity to do a series. If I did it as a pastor I would probably make at least three sermons out of it. Bro. Joe
